Witney Houston in Rome

Our Blogger: Marcelo

whitney-houston

Whitney Houston (at her 46)  plans the conquest of Rome next  4th may 2010. The concert of Whitney is already shaking Roman Foundations with the highest expectations.

Beyond the ‘’good girl’’ image during the 80’s and 90’s. Even beyond her ‘’incorrect’’ profile during the second part of the 90’s and the current decade. This last period included:  being late for interviews, canceling concerts and talk-show appearances, weight loss and rumors about drug abuse, airport security guards discovering marijuana in both Houston’s and Bobby Brown’s luggage at a Hawaiian airport in the year 2000 (anyway she boarded the plane  before authorities could arrive) etc etc …

Does it really matter after all? Her godmother, the Soul Goddess Aretha Franklin would be happy after all this things considering her busting success and skills:  Her debut album Whitney Houston in 1985, became the best-selling debut album by a female artist at the time of release.  Her second studio album Whitney (1987) became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart  Houston appeared in her first starring role in the feature film The Bodyguard in 1992  The film’s original soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Its lead single, “I Will Always Love You”, became one of the best-selling singles in music history.

affiche_bodyguard_1992_1Houston is one of the world’s best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million records, worldwide  She is ranked as the fourth best-selling female artist in the United States  Not bad for a girl born in a poor neighborhood in the projects of Newark, New Jersey. With her amazing career she grasped all the aspects of the American Dream…  After a concert in Milan, the singer will present in the Eternal City her last album called ‘I look to you’ already certified platinum for sales over one million copies in the U.S:

Our Blogger: Arianna

umbria-jazz-2009

9 hot days in July: from the 10 of the 19 you’ll have he chance to enjoy the summer with the Umbria jazz festival, one of the most popular and famous annual appointments with jazz in Europe.

So if you like great music and you would like to do something different, combining music and food, this festival it’s for you.

The location is beautiful: Perugia, a small pretty city full of history and youth. The University of Perugia is in fact the first one in Italy when it comes to exchange students from all around the world.

ahmad

The strongest names on this edition of the festival are those of Wynton Marsalis and Ahmad Jamal. Marsalis is the stablished leader of a new  batch of jazz musicians and a great educator. Jamal is known to jazz audiences for its minimalistic style that famously influenced Miles Davis. Many of the most important Italian jazz stars will offer concerts as well: Stefano Bollani in duo with Chick Corea, and the young Francesco Cafiso with Wynton Marsalis. To the joy of those more inclined to the more “pop” wing of jazz, Simply Red and Steely Dan will offer concerts as well.

The concerts of the festival will be held at three different venues: the most famous singers will exhibit in the S. Jillian arena . Please take a moment to imagine yourself here. See the beginning of summer, a sweet night, jazz sound all around and the acropolis behind…..Isn’t wonderful?

mar0-053a

Actually it’s possible choosing between other two locations: the Morlacchi theatre and the S. Caecilian oratorical where you can enjoy the music for free.

While listening the music you can enjoy some great italian cuisine: in fact in some local in city centre every day you can have, aperitif jazz ,lunch jazz, and dinner jazz.

For more information visit http://www.umbriajazz.com/

There’s nothing better to complete your artistic experience than a visit to Rome, anly a couple of hours of train away from Perugia. SERGIO CAMMARIERE, JAZZ WITH ITALIAN TASTE

Our Blogger: Stefano

1217313628_sergio-cammariere [320x200]Sergio Cammariere is an Italian singer renowned for his talent. Cammariere is an interpreter of Italian music and he mixes classical music, jazz and South American sounds.
Cammariere is cousin of the late Italian singer Rino Gaetano, a precursor of his times, a music rebel and a never forgotten artist despite the years.

Cammariere took his first steps in music at a young age, but the success came as a result of his participation in the Sanremo Festival in 2003. The mainstream public knows him for a song that has become famous: Tutto quello che un uomo. This song won the third place prize and the Critics at the Sanremo festival.

His most famous album is probably the first one, released on January 2002: Dalla pace del mare lontano. In this album there is a extraordinary equilibrium between harmony and emotion which makes every song on the album a small work of art.

Are famous his theatrical tour in which you usually play alone with the piano or with an accompaniment of some elements like cello and drums. There are many prizes he has won among which the Riccio d’Argento, the prize given to the best live author.

Among his other works are also memorable the soundtracks of several films including "Teste rasate" of 1994 and "Uomini senza donne" in 1996.
Cammariere is also engaged in social work and in 2008 joined the campaign against the administration of psychotropic drugs to children.

There’s no better place to start enjoying the many enchants of Italian lifestyle than Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes, two hotels that will make understand what Dolce Vita means!

ROME REMEMBERS LEONARDO DA VINCI’S LOVE FOR MUSIC

Our Blogger: Arianna

2904_leonardo_da_vinciWell known all over the world, Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the major examples of Italian genius: polyvalent  and enigmatic, his talents spanned from painting ( everybody knows the Gioconda and the  Last Supper), to beautiful sculptures and ingenious war inventions.

In particular I’m writing this post just to talk about the relation between Leonardo and the music.

In fact the artist really loved the music and he even composed some aria. Besides, he was a passionate player of the, literally “ arm lyre” (lira da braccio) and he even draw a model of this instrument.

Actually the  Organ Viola, the one that Leonardo draw has been built by the “Association de Recherche Culturelle L. De Vinci” from Sion (CH)

It’s fascinating to learn, regarding Leonardo’s love for music, that according to scholars Gian Mario Pala and Loredana Mazzarella, inside the Leonardo’s Last Supper there is a hidden a musical composition which has been synthesized digitally. Of course a new book on the subject is coming….

leonardo_da_vinci_last_supper  Now in Rome will take place on June the 12th 2009, Leonardo da Vinci e la Musica, a conference about this specific aspect of the artist’s life. There will be on display, too, the organ viola that Leonardo designed. The conference is part of a bigger project intended to draw an itinerary about the history of music between XVII and XX century and will be held at the National Museum of Musical Instruments, on the square of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme (Holy Cross in Jerusalem), near the subway station San Giovanni.

The entrance it’s for free but it’s necessary to book in advance.

To enjoy the stimulating cultural life of Rome, there’s no better option than Hotel Des Artistes and Yes Hotel, a great base to explore the Eternal City and Italy!

TIZIANO FERRO’S CONCERT IN ROME

Our Blogger: Arianna

On June 24th, in Rome Tiziano Ferro will offer a concert in Rome.

tiziano-ferro [320x200] Why to write a post about a Italian singer as Tiziano Ferro? Simple, because he is one of the better-known Italian singers worldwide, specially in Europe and South America.

There was a time when Tiziano, now a handsome young man, was a shy, fat teenager who decided to dedicate himself to music in order to mitigate his problems of self esteem ; in fact his first album 111 took its title from his weight in kilos during those years.

Maybe it was for his huge weight, maybe it was for his shyness, maybe it was for his introspection but the Tiziano’s songs stick instantly to your mind and before you know it you are humming the melody.

In the hotel where I work many clients asked about a beautiful song they hear in the streets of Rome. If you want to know why all those people found the song so remarkable, take a look at the video on this post. The song was Universal Prayer, and on it Tiziano teams with the singer  Jamelia.

What do you think now?

I’d like to share with you other details about Tiziano’s career.

Tiziano’s road to success hasn’t been simple at all.

He started studying guitar and violin, and later on he began to write songs hoping to become known at least in Italy. Then he tried to participate in the San Remo festival with the song You ‘ll be back but he didn’t pass the first selection.

It’s only in 2001 that Tiziano releases with EMI his first album Rosso Relativo which had a big success in Italy. Under the name of Relative Red the album was released too in the USA.

The international success of Tiziano it’s due in part to his ability to sing in several languages as Italian, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese.

In June 2006 a new important album comes out  Nessuno è solo, Nobody is alone which is released in 44 countries. In 2008 Tiziano wrote a song for Giusy Ferreri a girl who take part in X factor, the Italian answer to American Idol in USA and Pop Idol In Uk.

Ferro’s last album On my age comes out at the same time in 42 countries.

Finally i would like you to see Tiziano singing with Kelly Rowland the song Breath gentle.

The concert will take place in the Olimpic Stadium, in Rome. To get there, take the red subway line and get off at Ottaviano Station, and then take the bus 32. Both Hotel Des Artistes and Yes Hotel, are located in the station area, so they’re great options to look for a convenient accomodation!

ROME DISCOVERS AFRIKA! AFRIKA!

Our Blogger: Marcelo

afrika [320x200] The multimedia artist André Heller brings to Italy a wonderful troupe. The best performance and the best group to express the culture and artistic traditions of Africa.

In a tour that lasted two years, covering the whole continent, the black circus has gathered nearly three million viewers across Europe. AFRIKA! AFRIKA! is a sensual discovery of Africa by André Heller who aims to enchant the audience with its energy.

afrika3 [320x200]Heller recruited more than 100 artists, including tightrope walkers, singers, dancers, musicians, among the descendants of the great migration that has brought the Africans over the centuries both in the Americas and in Europe and the Middle East. His aim was to give the Africans a European stage large enough to express their art.

This is a unique opportunity to discover the African culture, which ‘’shows that Africa is very different from that packed too often stereotyped by the media,” as André Heller emphasizes.

In his review of Afrika! Afrika!, The German magazine Der Spiegel called the show ”the  realm of street artists and the place to save the taste of life”. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung even stated: ”The doctors should presafrika_afrika_new2_310cribe Afrika! Afrika! for therapeutic purposes!”.

Enjoy the magical AFRIKA! AFRIKA!, for the first time in Italy. This Spring in Milan from April 28 to May 3 (at Mediolanumforum) and in Rome May 5-9 (at the Palalottomatica Arena). Metallica in Concert in Rome

Our Blogger: Jona

Metallica is one of the greatest heavy metal bands in the world. From the beginning, with albums like Kill ‘Em All, and Master of the Puppets they became the face of a heavier, more aggressive rock that hooked immediately a whole generation of rock fans.

METALLICA2 A sad note that changed forever the story of the band is the demise of Cliff Burton who died when the band’s bus overturned in Sweden. Afterwards, the band was in the verge of separation, but with the help friends, Cliff’s family among them, they overcame the grief and began playing actively again.

Jason Newsted became the new bassist for the band, that still had many successful albums to come like Load, Reload and Death Magnetic. The band put back the heavy metal on its tracks after a decade of excess and manierism and gained almost instantly a place among the living rock legends of our time.

The band has a concert scheduled in Rome as a part of their World Magnetic-METALLICA European Style tour. The date is June 24th and the venue is the Palalottomatica Arena (where Bob Dylan will have a concert this year as well!)

A couple of great options to find accommodation are Yes Hotel and Hotel Des Artistes. Both are reasonably priced, and perfectly located to allow you to travel within the city with the public transportation system and to get the most of you staying.

Don’t hesitate to make a booking in any of these hotels!
