-Did the atmosphere of the Eternal City enchanted even the most acerbic of philosophers to the point of falling in love? Marcelo tells the story.

Due to health problems, Friedrich Nietzsche lead from 1880 until his collapse in January 1889 a gypsy-like existence. Searching for better climates his travels took him through Nice (during the winters), the Swiss alpine village of Sils-Maria (during the summers), Leipzig, Venice, Rapallo, Genoa, Turin, Messina, Florence, and…our beautiful city of Rome.

It was precisely there, in the Eternal City in 1882 that the unexpected happened: He fell in love…

This might be hard to believe if we consider certain sentences like: ‘‘Ah, women: they make the highs higher and the lows more frequent’’ and ‘‘For the woman, the man is a means: the end is always the child.’’

Nevertheless so it was, and probably the undeniable romantic atmosphere of Rome had something to do with it. In 1882 during a visit to Rome, Nietzsche, age thirty-seven, met the young Lou von Salomé (a twenty-one-year-old Russian woman a student of philosophy and theology in Zurich). He soon fell desperately in love with her, and even proposed her to marry him.

She declined.

From that moment Nietzsche’s friendship with her and Mister Paul Rée took a turn for the worse: Salomé and Rée decided to moved to Berlin…and left Nietzsche.

Years after, Salomé would become an associate of… Sigmund Freud! And would write with psychological approach of her relationship with the author of Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

It is as least part of his harsh view about women explained simply for a broken heart? Maybe, but he carried his pain on philosophically ‘‘That which does not kill us makes us stronger’’ and (what could be seen by many as surprising), with humbleness for ‘‘The demand to be loved is the greatest of all arrogant presumptions.’’

The philosopher lived what for some would be seen as an unhappy life. But perhaps his most important legacy is that is possible for us transform pain into something beautiful, by a complete “life-affirmation” (central core of his philosophy), a total yes, pain included.

No pain no gain.

If somebody is still skeptical about Nietzsche’s romantic approach here you have a last and maybe unexpected quotation: ‘‘Love is not consolation. It is light.’’

Still skeptical? Visit Rome and fall in love! Check our availability at www.hoteldesartistes.com and www.yeshotelrome.com !!!

On June 24th, in Rome Tiziano Ferro will offer a concert in Rome.

Why to write a post about a Italian singer as Tiziano Ferro? Simple, because he is one of the better-known Italian singers worldwide, specially in Europe and South America.

There was a time when Tiziano, now a handsome young man, was a shy, fat teenager who decided to dedicate himself to music in order to mitigate his problems of self esteem ; in fact his first album 111 took its title from his weight in kilos during those years.

Maybe it was for his huge weight, maybe it was for his shyness, maybe it was for his introspection but the Tiziano’s songs stick instantly to your mind and before you know it you are humming the melody.

In the hotel where I work many clients asked about a beautiful song they hear in the streets of Rome. If you want to know why all those people found the song so remarkable, take a look at the video on this post. The song was Universal Prayer, and on it Tiziano teams with the singer Jamelia.

What do you think now?

I’d like to share with you other details about Tiziano’s career.

Tiziano’s road to success hasn’t been simple at all.

He started studying guitar and violin, and later on he began to write songs hoping to become known at least in Italy. Then he tried to participate in the San Remo festival with the song You ‘ll be back but he didn’t pass the first selection.

It’s only in 2001 that Tiziano releases with EMI his first album Rosso Relativo which had a big success in Italy. Under the name of Relative Red the album was released too in the USA.

The international success of Tiziano it’s due in part to his ability to sing in several languages as Italian, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese.

In June 2006 a new important album comes out Nessuno è solo, Nobody is alone which is released in 44 countries. In 2008 Tiziano wrote a song for Giusy Ferreri a girl who take part in X factor, the Italian answer to American Idol in USA and Pop Idol In Uk.

Ferro’s last album On my age comes out at the same time in 42 countries.

Finally i would like you to see Tiziano singing with Kelly Rowland the song Breath gentle.

The concert will take place in the Olimpic Stadium, in Rome. To get there, take the red subway line and get off at Ottaviano Station, and then take the bus 32. Both Hotel Des Artistes and Yes Hotel, are located in the station area, so they’re great options to look for a convenient accomodation!

Ennio Morricone is an Italian composer and musician, born in Rome. His long artistic career includes a wide range of composition genres and he has always produced, as well as worked as a conductor.

If you look for Silvio Berlusconi on Wikipedia you’ll discover he’s “an Italian politician, entrepeneur, real estate and insurance tycoon, bank and media proprietor, sports owner and songwriter".

Berlusconi is a man of many faces, and undoubtedly this versatility is one of the virtues that have allowed him to stay in power for more than ten years.

To understand Berlusconi is to understand Italy: its fears, its dreams. The man owns (successfully) a powerful world-class soccer team, is the third richest man in Italy and a charming figure who has convinced the Italians to elect him on two different occasions. On the other hand, the initial sources of his wealth are still subject to debate. He is well known for tailoring laws that fit his needs, and has been deemed in more than one occasion “unfit to lead” , in the words of The Economist.

Berlusconi started doing business in his Native Milan, with a huge real estate project called Milano 2. Then he jumped to the media industry and banking and then went on to found his own party in 1994. According to some, he did this to save himself from jail and his interests from bankruptcy, or, in Berlusconi’s version , to become “a public servant because I do not want to live in an illiberal country, ruled by immature forces and by people who are well and truly bound to a past that proved both a political and economic failure”. In the last part of this sentence, he was trying to exploit the Italians fear of communism, a common weapon in his media arsenal..

Even if you don’t agree with his ideas or his life its difficult not to like Berlusconi, and that’s perhaps his most dangerous talent. He is, maybe, the ultimate entertainer: he wrote the anthems for his own party, Forza Italia; of his soccer team, AC Milan, and takes care of his image with the compulsion of an actor: For example, its well-known in Italy that he has had a face-lift and several hair transplants. There is also something dramatic, or better, tragicomic in some of his most famous “Berlusconisms”, the most recent defining Barack Obama, as a “handsome tanned man.” Berlusconi incarnates Italy, as it is right now. And this Italy will live as long as Berlusconi. And Vice-versa.

If you want to have a chance to see Berlusconi while you are in Rome, try taking a walk on Via del Corso: Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Italian government, lies there. To have easy access to this and many other Roman curiosities, make sure to book a well located hotel. Yes Hotel, and Hotel Des Artistes are two excellent options.

Mr Wiltshire is not your average Londoner. Born in 1974 from West Indian parents, affected of a form of autism he never was able to communicate with the outside world like the rest of us. He grew up with his mum and sister. It soon became obvious that he had an exceptional talent at drawing and recreating scenes of what he saw.

As early as 1987, he was spotted by the BBC and the very same year some of his works were already published. Since then Stephen Wiltshire became the subject of many Tv documentaries.

If at the beginning Stephen would draw animals, then London buses, he eventually dedicated to landscapes, cities and great buildings of all over the world: In 2001, further to flying over the city by helicopter, he then did a perfectly detailed and accurate drawing of London. Subsequently , he also drew Tokyo in 2005, and at a later stage he drew Frankfurt and Hong Kong.

Stephen Wiltshire, now known as the Human Eye because of his extraordinary ability to memorize all visual details and to recopy them on paper, came to Rome in June 2005. He took a short trip on helicopter during which he admired the Trevi Fountain, Rome St Peter’s Cathedral, the Ancient Rome and the Colosseum and the Venezia Square, and also flew over our My Hotel Rome.

His drawing of the city of Rome took him a couple of days only, and the accuracy of it all is simply amazing.
